The moon looks like a toenail

Brother: “Why can you see, like, a shadow of the Moon – but a shadow that is not dark – when the Moon is at crescent? It looks like… hm…”

Me: “It’s called ‘earthshine’ – when the part of the Moon that isn’t lit by the Sun is lit by light reflecting off the Earth… In fact, the dark part of the Moon is not actually covered by Earth’s shadow: it’s tucked behind the Moon itself, like night-time here on Earth… The only time the Moon can be in the Earth’s shadow is at full Moon, during a lunar eclipse. Quite fascinating really…”

Brother: “(completely not listening) Aaahhh! The moon looks like a toenail!”

Me: “…”
